Maenam is located in the heart of Kitsilano, right on West 4th Avenue and offers traditional Thai cuisine with a modern twist. I visited the restaurant during the Dine Out Vancouver Festival with some friends, which was a fantastic opportunity to sample many different dishes.

Chef and Owner Angus An learned at the reputable French Culinary Institute in New York. After spending some time in the UK, working at prestigious Michelin-starred restaurants such as The Ledbury and The Fat Duck, he returned to Vancouver to open his first restaurant Gastropod, followed by Maenam in 2009. By today he has opened 3 more restaurants across Vancouver.

Maenam - Thai Restaurant Vancouver - Foodblog

I loved the food at Maenam and had a fantastic evening. From interior design to the presentation of the food, everything is executed with great attention to detail. The different flavours are a true sensation for your tongue and left me wishing they would never vanish.

The Food

The dining style at Maenam can be described as family-style, meaning you order multiple dishes to share for your table. Even the dine out menu was designed that way. We ordered 12 dishes between 4 people, which seemed a lot by the time of ordering and even more overwhelming when it arrived at our table. I have never seen that much food on a table.

I have to be honest, I don’t remember the names of all the dishes at Maenam and their ingredients but here is a selection of what we ordered:

Tom gati of coconut and chicken soup – deliciously creamy soup tasting of lemongrass and coconut. The best way to start of the meal!

Thai style tuna ceviche – perfectly prepared tuna with a flavourful crust. The toasted rice powder was very interesting.

8 spice Ling Cod – my favourite dish of the night! The cod was super crisp on the outside, revealing a melt in your mouth texture on the inside. I loved the caramelized palm sugar as finishing touch, it balanced the spices perfectly.

Chicken cashew stir fry – has everything you would expect from a good stir fry. Nothing too crazy going on here but the flavours all work really well together. Would definitely order this one again, great comfort food!

Southern style red curry of seafood – a very aromatic and rich curry with a variation of seafood.

Thai long green eggplant – my second favourite dish at Maenam and I am an eggplant-sceptic! I loved that slight kick of heat from the chillies paired with lots of garlic.

Banana Roti with ice cream – the only way to end your dinner at Maenam!

The Atmosphere

Maenam’s interior design is clean and simple. Straight lines and minimalist furniture give it a modern touch. Lots of bamboo accessories add coziness and pick up the Thai theme. The lighting in the evening was very dim, which makes it a great place for a romantic dinner.

The Service

I experienced fantastic service at Maenam. Our waitress was very attentive and had great knowledge about the menu and the particular ingredients of the dishes. At any time of the evening I felt taken care off and had absolutely no complaints.

What I liked

I particularly like that Maenam offers a tasting menu all year round and I would strongly recommend giving it a try. It’s the perfect way to experience as many dishes as possible.
My two favourite dishes are the 8 spice Ling Cod and the Thai green eggplant, make sure to order these when you visit!

What I didn’t like

There is nothing I didn’t like at Maenam, overall a good experience!

Maenam is the perfect place for a first date or a romantic candle light dinner. With it's cozy atmosphere and dimmed lighting it provides a great atmosphere. Chef Angus An creates stunning dishes, which are inspired by traditional Thai food but surprise with hints of west coast flair. What I love the most is that the dishes are designed to share, the whole menu is family style. So grab some friends and try as many dishes as you can at Maenam!
